A teenage girl’s new camcorder allows her to document the mental deterioration of her father and the social disintegration of their family home, when secrets, lies, and financial pressures begin to take their toll, in Rotheroe’s painfully credible, rightly horrific, and quite remarkable second feature, which easily manages to transcend its slightly hackneyed form. Whisky (2004)
Posted on 03:36 by uthpa
When his younger brother flies in from Brazil for their mother’s unveiling ceremony, an ageing sock factory owner asks one of his employees to pose as his wife for a few days; all goes smoothly until an impromptu trip to an off-season tourist resort brings simmering sibling rivalry (almost) to the fore, in Rebella and Stoll’s quietly funny, gently moving, and subtly perceptive film, filled with melancholically expressive mise en scène. Iain.Stott
Micro Men (2009)
Posted on 03:23 by uthpa
Micro Men is an oft funny, vaguely tongue-in-cheek though perhaps slightly patronising portrait of the friendship-turned-rivalry between home computer pioneers Clive Sinclair and Chris Curry, depicting the meteoric rise and sad fall of their respective companies, Sinclair and Acorn. Iain.Stott

Belgium/France
Feature Film
Original Title: L’enfant
Writer/Directors: Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne
Cinematographer: Alain Marcoen
Cast: Jérémie Renier, Déborah François, Jérémie Segard
A young chancer, who spends his days stealing, begging, and generally enjoying himself, sells his 9-day-old baby son behind his girlfriend’s back, but when she finds out and goes to the police, he arranges for his return, which leaves him severely and dangerously in debt to some local gangsters, in this searing, visceral, and ultimately tremendously moving thriller cum character study from the ever brilliant Dardenne brothers. The Day of the Triffids (2009)
Posted on 03:23 by uthpa
When a series of solar flares results in the blindness of the majority of the human race, society collapses and a breed of genetically altered man eating plant is set upon the world, but one man, an expert on such creatures, becomes to determined to find a way to stop them, in this mildly diverting but horribly uneven and rather loose adaptation of Wyndham’s classic novel, which suffers terribly from a lack of logic, but just about makes up for it with a certain amount of camp charm (but not quite). Iain.Stott
John Wyndham's novel was previously adapted as The Day of the Triffids (1981).

Feature Film
Writer/Director: Lars von Trier
Cinematographer: Anthony Dod Mantle
Cast: Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg
Following the accidental death of their infant son, a grieving couple travel to an isolated cabin in the woods in an attempt to work through their grief, guilt, and fear, but their problems merely become exacerbated, in von Trier’s polarising psychological horror film; a harrowing, painful, and occasionally brilliant work, boasting two exceptional and exceptionally brave performances. Brother (1997)
Posted on 04:01 by uthpa
A young but rather old fashioned man, recently demobbed from the army, goes to live in St. Petersburg with his brother, a low-level gangster, and becomes involved in the family business, but his personality – a strange mix of ruthlessness, compassion, and pride – soon gets him into trouble, in Balabanov’s low-key crime film, which features an excellent performance from Bodrov and provides an intriguing look at a society in the process of change. Incendiary (2008)
Posted on 03:40 by uthpa
Although much of its plot detail defies credibility, and its overly insistent score becomes rather distracting after a while, this much maligned film – in which a doting young mother, in a slightly unhappy marriage, tentatively begins an affair with a journalist, only to have her life ripped apart when her husband and son are killed in a terrorist attack – proves to be, never the less, a really quite moving work, thanks in the main to Williams’s brave performance. France/Belgium
Television Mini-Series
Original Title: Marie Besnard: L'empoisonneuse...
Director: Christian Faure
Writers: Daniel Riche, Olga Vincent, Anne Giafferi
Cinematographer: Willy Stassen
Composers: Charles Court, Carolin Petit
Cast: Muriel Robin, Mélanie Bernier, Jean-Yves Chatelais, Mado Maurin, Frank Geney, Annie Grégorio, Olivier Saladin, Gérard Chaillou, Marie-France Santon, Grégory Fitoussi, Pascal Reneric, Jean-Noël Brouté
When a wealthy landowner dies unexpectedly, his lover points an accusatory finger at his wife, levelling charges of poisoning, which gradually acquire public and official support, leading to her eventually being charged with twelve murders, in this well-made and decidedly unpredictable account of the real-life legal case of Marie Besnard, which proves to be an interesting examination of guilt and its perception. Every square inch of Yamanaka and Mimura’s exquisitely composed frame drips with meaning and portent in this gently humorous and terribly moving work; a portrait of the poor inhabitants of an 18th Century Japanese backstreet, depicting their troubled encounters with a high ranking samurai and the thugs with whom he associates. A hopeless alcoholic commandeers a young Mexican woman’s plan to kidnap her estranged son, contriving to demand two million dollars from the boy’s rich grandfather, but her plan, like her life in general, doesn’t run at all smoothly, in Zonca’s painfully authentic feeling thriller, which can boast of a harrowingly dexterous performance from Swinton. Veronika Voss – a down-on-her-luck, drug addicted actress, who was a huge film star during the Nazi era, but now finds herself totally beholden to her morally dubious, morphine pushing doctor – stumbles into the life a sports journalist, who becomes obsessively intrigued by her and her perplexing lifestyle, in this beautifully photographed and adroitly acted film, the final part of Fassbinder’s BRD Trilogy. The Fattest Man in Britain (2009)
Posted on 05:09 by uthpa
Georgie Godwin, marketed as Britain’s fattest man by his agent (a foul-mouthedly brilliant Bobby Ball), spends his days watching Jeremy Kyle and chomping down Viennetta, happily eating his way towards an early grave, contented by the thought of bringing momentary happiness to Japanese tourists, that is until he makes a rather unlikely friendship with a pregnant teenager, in this trouser-soilingly funny and surprisingly tender comedy-drama. The Baby's Room (2006)
Posted on 13:25 by uthpa
A young couple with a seven-month-old son move into the house of their dreams – a grand, old fixer-upper – but their perfect life is soon put under pressure when the father begins to see ghostly figures on the baby monitor, leading to some rather obsessive behaviour, in de la Iglesia’s decidedly creepy, thoroughly unpredictable, and surprisingly perceptive little ghost story. When a worker kills himself after being falsely accused of theft, his comrades go out on strike, demanding an eight-hour workday and a 30% wage increase; but the factory owners, with the aid of the police, violently quell the unrest, in Eisenstein’s formally playful and campily entertaining film, which is let down somewhat by its laughable depiction of the chin-stroking, baby-killing, and distinctly inhuman capitalists. Which Way Home (2009)
Posted on 11:51 by uthpa
Rebecca Cammisa’s remarkable, eye-opening, and deeply moving documentary follows the plights of a number of guardianless Central American child migrants attempting to reach the USA in search of a better life, documenting their precarious train top journeys, detailing their hopes and dreams, and following home those lucky enough to escape with their lives (and the bodies of those not). Margot (2009)

Filmed as part of the BBC’s Women We Loved season, this visually arresting, deftly acted portrait of the famed ballerina, Margot Fonteyn – depicting her failing relationship with her wannabe revolutionary husband Tito Arias and her brief, passionate affair with Rudi Nureyev, who was half her age – proves to be a thoroughly entertaining work, and perhaps the most interesting of the trio of BBC4 films. As we move from waiting room to living room to hospital bed, a lonely middle-aged woman with a love for office gossip delivers several monologues, which ostensibly update us about her ailing health, but are dominated more by the seemingly trivial details her everyday life and her observations of those around her, in this painfully funny, wincingly perceptive, and devastatingly moving one woman play; a groundbreaking masterpiece.
