A sailor, who has been away at sea for seven years, returns to his home port and bumps into his emotionally and physically abusive father’s former mistress, with whom he himself had a brief tryst, bringing back a flood of memories, good and bad, from their brief time together, in Bergman’s brilliantly made but unconvincingly written melodrama; a collection of beautifully lit, expertly composed, and symbolically rich scenes, deserving of a better plot.
