Robbe-Grillet’s enigmatic film – in which dreams, nightmares, fantasies, paintings, photographs, and beautiful women drift in and out of each other, forming a sexy, sensual, and disquieting psychological journey to nowhere in particular – comes across like a lost Hitchcock movie filtered through the eyes of René Magritte, and is just as alluringly wonderful as that would suggest.
