Despite some incongruously noir-like high-contrast black-and-white photography and the odd strange character development, Mackendrick’s ambling comedy – in which an ageing puffer boat captain blags his way in to a lucrative contract, transporting a rich American’s furniture to his new island home, much to the chagrin of all involved – is, never the less, a thoroughly entertaining and unpredictable if decidedly minor work.
