As much a portrait of himself as of his home town, and a funny, moving, and dazzlingly inventive one at that, Maddin’s (sort-of) documentary, combining archive footage with typically stylised recreations, is a personal film of rare beauty that makes even the great Terence Davies’s similarly themed Of Time and the City (2008) seem prosaic in comparison.
