Although generally rather silly, Whale’s tongue-in-cheek follow-up to Frankenstein (1931) – in which the titular doctor is blackmailed by the nefarious Dr. Pretorius into helping him to create a mate for The Monster – is also (with its excellent production values, larger-than-life performances, and light-hearted plotting) a campily entertaining if not particularly memorable diversion.
