Sumptuous production design and gorgeous photography can’t prevent Malle’s tale of a pre-pubescent girl’s induction into prostitution in a New Orleans brothel in the late 1910s – with its strange character developments, horribly awkward dialogue, and rather wooden performances – from being something of a dud and never even vaguely believable.
