Despite the awful, laughably incongruous, light-hearted ending, Hawks’s highly praised western – following Wayne’s psychotically determined cowboy on an epic cattle drive from Texas to Missouri, during which his tyrannical tendencies come painfully to the fore – is, never the less, a divertingly entertaining film with numerous memorable (as well as forgettable) moments.
