Although it pales in comparison to his more philosophical works, Bergman’s brief flirtation with social-realism – following the ups and downs of a budding romance between a troubled young girl, fresh from a reformatory, and a former sailor trying to make a new life for himself in a rough port town – is a work of quite some power and, compared to most films of its day, is decidedly adult in its depiction of difficult subject matter.
