The first part of Ford’s Cavalry Trilogy (followed by She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande) – depicting an arrogant lieutenant colonel’s disastrous succession to power at the eponymous military base, culminating in an ill-advised battle with Cochise’s Apache warriors – is a frequently funny, pleasingly critical, and sadly convincing exploration of human and military fallibilities and virtues.
