Full of great emotions, grand gestures, and epic shadows, Polonsky’s slightly camp, slightly over-the-top, gangland melodrama – depicting a couple of apocalyptic days in the lives of two estranged brothers, both involved in the numbers rackets, but at opposite ends – is a beautifully operatically shot, staged, and acted fatalistic gem.
