Mixing cartoonishly violent action scenes with unsubtle but pleasing satirical detail, Verhoeven’s first American film – in which a corrupt, third party corporation, running the police force in Old Detroit, turn to robotics in order to reduce crime and indulge in their nefarious capitalistic schemes – is hardly a film of great refinement, but is, never the less, hugely enjoyable.
