Managing to be both an excellent example of and a winning pastiche of the fantasy genre, Reiner’s cracking film – in which the true love between a country girl and a farm boy is threatened by a nefarious prince, the Cliffs of Insanity, Rodents of Unusual Size, Lightning Sand, and the Pit of Despair – is never less than thoroughly entertaining, and is frequently laugh-out-loud funny.
